Business Central as the finance and operations system of record

Finance and operations still close on tools that do not share one ledger. The CFO cannot certify a number the COO cannot see in inventory or fulfillment. The CIO is asked to hold that gap with point solutions. The committee then reviews a transformation that never names the system of record.

The operating model comes first. Close, inventory, and order-to-cash have to be named before anyone configures a company in Business Central. So do the few connections that retire manual control. A program that starts in the product will recreate the same exceptions the committee already lives with. A program that starts with the operating model gives the CFO a close path, the COO a materials and fulfillment path, and the CIO a single estate to secure.

Then Business Central is configured to that design. Licensing follows the roles that will actually post. Migration follows the ledgers and open items the close depends on. Cutover is a named event with a named open period. A named engagement lead owns the plan that goes to the committee. Length is set in discovery. Discover, configure, test, and go-live stay the sequence. The calendar is taken to the committee as a named plan.

The committee should ask three questions before it funds the work. The CFO should ask which books will post in Business Central on the first close after go-live, and which will still sit outside. The COO should ask how inventory, production, and fulfillment will use the same item and order records the ledger uses. The CIO should ask which identities, environments, and integrations sit on that program, and which will be retired. If those answers are vague, the system of record is not yet designed.

AI implementation belongs on that spine. Assistants and automation are useful when they are grounded in Business Central data and the process design already agreed. Policy-based routing with a complete trail is the standard. A common first release is email approvals moved onto an ERP workflow. The point is control and cycle time on the ledger.

Systems integration is the same program. A common first integration is CRM opportunity to invoice, so sales and finance share one cash path. Other connections are scoped only where they retire manual control. Cloud migration sits under this work when the current estate has to move with the ERP. Integration that does not serve the system of record stays out of scope.
